For more than a century, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Auxiliaries have proudly served veterans, military families, and local communities through service, remembrance, patriotism, and advocacy. Our organization is made up of combat veterans and their family members who are committed to honoring those who served while continuing to make a positive difference in their lives.
Throughout the year, the Spiro VFW Post 4884 & Auxiliary, work to provide assistance, fellowship, youth programs, patriotic education, opportunities for service, and support veteran legislation. From helping veterans in need to supporting military families and promoting patriotism in our schools and community, our mission is rooted in service to others.
Some of our local traditions include:
• Placing flags on the graves of veterans throughout local cemeteries during Memorial Day as
a tribute to their sacrifice and service
• Distributing Buddy Poppy™ in remembrance of those whose blood was shed in defense of
our freedoms
• Flag bunting fundraisers to bring attention to the alarming suicide rate among veterans;
• Missing Man Ceremonies that honor those held Prisoners of War or Missing in Action;
• Annual Veterans Day programs at area schools honoring all who served
• Blood drive fundraisers
• Voice of Democracy & Patriot Pen essay contests that o\er scholarships to winning entries
• Collection and retirement of worn American flags
• Illustrating Arts & Creative Patriotic Art Contests that award students for their patriotic art
entries
